I hear a lot–I mean A LOT–of people complaining about the Walmart Self Checkout system. And if you would allow me to be blunt-honest with you, I would say that I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE that self checkout system. I don’t go to Walmart to become their unpaid cashier associate. And to make a bit of confession, I have used it before because of time restraints. But now I simply don’t go if I am under time retraints. Now I patiently wait in line for that lonely, single cashier (occasionally there are 2).

And that’s what got me to thinking–about people. No, not Walmart’s corporate board who made this horrible decision; the people, and in particular those poor souls who use the self checkout system. Every time I go in to our local Walmart I see several people using that system. Do they realize they are only adding to the corporate pockets more money and denying people a job? But they look like sheeple–you know–a cross between sheep and people.

So many, TOOO many people are choosing for themselves this Walmart kind of life. What am I ranting about? Look at that first word in the sign:

SELF! Our culture is putting the emphasis on SELF! What WE want. What WE deserve. How that WE are capable of figuring out this thing called life without any other help. And for God to help us out? Jeez Louise, we don’t need His help at all. We can do it ourself! And now we are being overwhelmed by a tsunami of consequences. Lives are being crushed and pushed around; only to be swept out to sea. I remember a song from my teenage years, “The Age Of Aquarius”! Well, 2022 is The Age Of Self-Aggrandizement!

REALITY CHECK! We can’t handle life by SELF! We need help–but not just any help. We don’t need Dr. Phil, or Oprah, nor the advice of Trevor Noah. And we really need to stop talking to ourselves in order to get sound advice. When we talk to ourselves like this, what we end up with is a lot of sound and very little advice. What we need is to look–look above this mess to the only ONE who took the chaos and created the earth and the universe. And for heaven’s sake–stop using the self checkout line at Walmart!

In my distress I called to theĀ LORD,
and he answered me.

OH, LORD! IT’S MONDAY! THE ATTACK OF ATAXIA!

“If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what’s the sign of an empty desk?” This was the sign on Dr. Wells desk. He was one of my Old Testament professors–and that sign on his desk was appropriate. Books and papers all over his desk. And I thought to myself (something dangerous for me to do), “Self, this man is my hero!” You see, I am the world’s worst at creating clutter. I have taken creating clutter to the highest level of both art and science. But recently I’ve learned something else about clutter–and it ain’t pretty.

Clutter causes ATAXIA! No, not the pathological condition–it’s a condition of the mind and heart that permeates into our very core. It’s living with and in clutter. Clutter isn’t the same thing as procrastination, putting off what we should do today. Clutter is the outcome of not thinking further down the road. It’s the lack of organizing our things–our mind–our heart. Clutter takes on a life of its own–growing and growing until it takes over everything. What brought me here is my He-Shed. When I got through using something, rather than put it back in its place, I left it wherever. And I did this consistently. And now? I realized my He-Shed had influenced my thinking. So, I’ve been busy cleaning up the clutter. And it’s been frustrating, to say the least.

But when our heart and mind is cluttered, it’s both dangerous and deadly! Clutter robs us of the joy of life and makes Monday a pain in the, well you know what! Clutter even affects our spiritual life. And that’s why Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of GodĀ above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew chapter 6, verse 33) And I’m on a journey to keep God first–by eliminating that He-Shed clutter–because clutter is contagious and affects every part of our life.

So, if this Monday is a dread to you–look for the clutter in your life. Then make Jesus and The Kingdom your priority. And how do we get rid of clutter? By getting rid of what we don’t need–and organizing what we need. And trust me, that takes a lot of focus and fighting against frustration. But when we stick to it, then we can say: Good! Lord, it’s Monday! What shall we do together?” Excuse me, but I’ve got more clutter to tackle today!

IF A CLUTTERED DESK IS THE SIGN OF A CLUTTERED MIND, WHAT’S THE SIGN OF AN EMPTY DESK?

Never in a thousand centuries would I have imagined that I would remember anything from one of Dr. Well’s Old Testament class at Birmingham-Southern. Well, it’s not from his class–it was the sign on his office desk: If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what’s the sign of an empty desk? Well, his desk was the epitome of cluttered. But I am not judging him–you should see my workspace! On second thought–you shouldn’t! And this morning I found myself thinking about all the cluttered thinking seen in our culture.

For example, recently a young man choose to carjack someone–who happened to be armed. The young man was shot and killed, and a family member stated on the local news that the driver shouldn’t have shot him and should be arrested for murder. Cluttered Thinking. Parents are allowing, even encouraging adolesent children choose their gender rather than allowing biology to do what it does. Cluttered Thinking.

And in my own Tribe (the United Methodist Church), this year our governing Conference of United Methodists from around the world are to convene and the biggest issue is deciding that it’s time to depart ways–it’s called The Protocol For Separation. It’s been postponed since 2020 because of this COVID mess. But travel from foreign countries is being allowed if the traveler has been vaccinated. Well, in some regions, limited funds have prevented people from being vaccinated. In order to enable UMC delegates from other nations to attend this General Conference, an orthodox group of United Methodists began a plan to vaccinate those delegates–without regard to how they stand on the Protocol issue.

Good thing, right? But our more progressive kinfolk are outraged by this act of kindness. Their thinking says, “No one should be vaccinated until everyone can be vaccinated!” See, cluttered thinking! Why all of this cluttered thinking in every arena of life? Because there is no single standard for The Truth! Everyone is encouraged to choose “their” truth! Without an absolute Truth, human thinking remains cluttered–and it will only get worse! It’s like roadside litter–if someone or some group doesn’t clean it up–it only gets worse.

What I can’t understand is why those with cluttered thinking cannot see the devastation and destruction they are creating and encouraging! It’s like they are saying, “OK, it’s a mess right now–but if we just keep on thinking our way, then eventually we will figure it out!” God’s Word alone–not our interpretations of it–but God’s Word alone must be The Absolute when it comes to how we think. If our thinking is contrary to God’s Word, meaning The Bible, we need to change OUR thinking–NOT what the Bible teaches! To declutter the mind–we need to do a personal inventory on our thinking–and anything that contradicts The Bible needs to be thrown away. I leave you with this thought:

If we allow The Bible to speak to us, rather than us speaking for The Bible, we will be liberated from the clutter of our times.

Some Parts Are Missing

Image from Omni Containment Systems

Three of the most dreaded words to read are: “Some Assembly Required”. Maybe that’s just the “man” in me–you know–“Who reads the instructions? Real men don’t need instructions!” But have you ever tried to put something together and near the end find out that some parts are missing (or lost)? Frustrating, isn’t it!

Several years ago my fabulous wife purchased me a Smoker. I couldn’t wait to put it together and try it out! Well, I removed all the parts, found that useless Instruction Manuel, but something was missing! The nuts and bolts required to assemble it. I called myself looking, still no nuts and bolts. I started to return it to the store, but that useless Instruction Manual caught my attention. It said, and I quote: “If any part(s) are missing contact customer service. Do not take it back to the retailer.” So I called and in just a couple of days the nuts and bolts arrived. And I assembled it; mind you, without the Instruction Manual because that’s what real men do!

It was a work of beautiful art when I finished it. I began cleaning up all that cardboard and packing materials and something hard hit the patio floor. Can you guess what it was? Yep! The nuts and bolts. In defiance of my most diligent search, right there they were; plain as day! But how could that be? I rummaged through all that packing material and I knew they weren’t there. Put me on a lie detector machine and I would have passed it with flying colors! So, how could they have been there all along? There must be somebody to blame! They snuck in when I wasn’t looking, carefully cut the packing tape, found those nuts and bolts, and sealed the box back. Yes, that’s what must have happened! I mean, it’s impossible for me to have missed something! Isn’t it?

No it’s not impossible! And it’s not impossible to miss the presence of God. It happens with regularity to the best of us. It happens as we get more busy with things than with life. It happens as we live life haphazardly–with no real focus. It happens when, as in my case, we think we are right–but we are wrong, oh, so wrong! It happens when we look only at the surface of Scriptures without taking that deep dive where the Treasure often lies.

Following Jesus isn’t always easy–but it is really simple. So simple, that many often miss out on Real Life. We let the wrappings and “packing materials” get in the way, and like I thought about those nuts and bolts, we believe the lie that God is holding out on us. The truth is, Life has been there all along–we just didn’t look deep enough. Learn from my mistake (no, not ignoring the Instruction Manual)–take a deep breath, and look through everything. And if you want Life–I mean Real Life–I mean Life To The Max–look to Jesus. He’s been there all along!

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding ā€œYes!ā€ And through Christ, our ā€œAmenā€ (which means ā€œYesā€) ascends to God for his glory.

Cleansers!

blank

Well, time for my daily class assignment:Ā  What did you learn yesterday?Ā  As the day began I was looking forward to it.Ā  But now?Ā  I admit that it is a bit more difficult than I imagined.Ā  Has that ever happened to you?Ā  Something you thought you could do, easily do, but out of nowhere it became difficult.Ā  Truthfully….I don’t like difficult.Ā  Thinking about what to write was as blank as this graphic.Ā  So what does one do when preparing for test time?Ā  You review your notes.

Set up the beach canopy–check!Ā  Cooler with drinks–check!Ā  Beach towels–check!Ā  Beach chairs set up–check!Ā  Bag with snacks–check!Ā  Reading materials–check!Ā  Sunscreen and applied–check and check!Ā  Feet buried in the sand–check.Ā  What next?Ā  Sitting in the shade of the canopy, looking at the scene graciously provided for us by The Creator.Ā  Listening to the sounds of waves and birds.Ā  When we were a bit warm, going into the Gulf to cool off, floating on the gentle waves.Ā  Then a southerly breeze came in helping to keep us cool.Ā  A couple of naps between finishing that book.

Where’s the lesson?Ā  WHAT’S the lesson?Ā  What am I forgetting?Ā  And it finally hit me.Ā  There was that moment I realized my mind was totally blank. (Please, no comments from the monkey gallery!)Ā  And there were other moments when my mind was blank….cleansed from everything.Ā  No thoughts about writing, the churches, my Dad, my own grief from Mother’s recent death.Ā  My mind has been cleansed.Ā  Think of it as a computer reset.Ā  Cleansers–that’s the lesson.

There are cleansers for the face, microwaves, ovens, bathtubs, commodes, even this thing called a colon cleanse (now try to get that image out of your mind!).Ā  My Father knew what I needed on that day–for my mind to be completely cleansed–to set aside all my thoughts–just to be me in the presence of my King and Creator!

The blood of Jesus cleanses our hearts, but what can cleanse our minds?Ā  The mind is more complicated and delicate matter.Ā  A few sentences back I mentioned “colon cleanse”–how many of you still have that image in your mind?Ā  If we try to get some thought out of our mind, say a certain song or a colon cleanse, it only seems to linger and grow roots.Ā  And should we cleanse our minds of all thoughts, what will we replace them with?

I’m thinking about a story Jesus once told found in Matthew 12.Ā  A man seemed to have rid his mind and heart of a demon.Ā  The demon went looking for another home.Ā  Failing to find one, he returned to that man.Ā  Found the home of his heart and mind cleaned but unoccupied.Ā  So he goes and gets 7 buddies and moves right back in.Ā  And the point is???Ā  Once your mind is cleansed, make very sure that it is immediately occupied with God’s presence.

When I had my mind cleanse, I did it intentionally in His Presence.Ā  The result was that He rearranged some thoughts and replaced others.Ā  Along with that process, He provided me with balance, perspective and wisdom.Ā  And I urgently needed that to happen.Ā  So when your thoughts overwhelm you, when you mind resembles that junk closet, take the time to be in His presence.Ā  No agenda, no asking, no searching for answers–just alone with Him.Ā  As you as prepare for this cleansing, and before you begin, make the decision to ask Him to sort it all out.Ā  Add this “cleansing” process to your regular spiritual disciplines.Ā  Allow it to be a part of your spiritual disciplines.Ā  Balance, perspective and wisdom–all are gifts found only in His presence.

Love God with all your heart.Ā  Love others the way Jesus loves you.Ā  And make sure all the glory goes to Him!

Excuse me now, I hear the bell for the next class to begin.Ā  And I am ready for it, more than when this week began because I now have His balance, perspective and wisdom.

And We Are Keeping This Because?

Holding On To Spiritual Clutter

cluttered-garage

Something amazing happened yesterday that absolutely surprised me and filled me with indescribable joy. Ā Some of the Worship Team came to remove the Chrismons from the tree in the sanctuary and to take down and put up all the decorations from the Advent Season. Ā Down the hallway from the sanctuary is a series of storage closets with those louvered bi-fold doors. Ā I had looked in them before and they were filled with a lot of stuff, I mean a LOT of STUFF. Ā Now here is what surprised me and created a sense of euphoric joy.

The Worship Team leader asked me if they could clean up those closets, remove what we did not need and then organize it. Ā Do you know what I did? Ā I made the sign of the Cross over them, ordained them to the task (if I had a bottle of anointing oil I would have anointed them with oil) and blessed them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost! Ā And they went to work sorting and determining what we actually use. Ā Among the many items was an old metal box that we determined that at one time was the heart of the church phone system. Ā There were a few coffee pots, some “made in China” bud vases covered in about 15 years of holy dust (it is a church you know), assorted sizes of nearly used-up candles, and a variety of items too numerous to list.

Some items were moved to a new storage location we call the dumpster. Ā Other items were moved to the stage in the fellowship hall, neatly arranged. Ā An announcement will be made for the next two Sundays inviting the folks to browse through those items to take home with them if they have any value to them, after which those items will be re-purposed at the local thrift store. Ā Then they organized and stored the items we actually need and use. Ā It was a beautiful sightĀ to behold. Ā As a pastor, it was one of those moments when God affirms to you that your work in the LordĀ is not in vain. Ā But this morning it caused me to think.

How much spiritual clutter do we carry around with us that is either unnecessary or is no longer needed in our spiritual journey? Ā Right now I am thinking about my Old Testament professor at Birmingham Southern College, Dr. Wells, God rest his soul. Ā On top of his office desk were piles and piles of paper and in front of those piles was a sign I have never forgotten. Ā It said: Ā “If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what’s the sign of anĀ empty desk?” Ā I admit that most of the time my desk top is, well I won’t say cluttered, but I will say it’s “organized chaos”. Ā I do know where to look when I need something, well, some of the time. Ā And I am also realizing more frequently, that my “organized clutter desk top” is a sign that I am keeping spiritual clutter that needs to be gone.

Paul understood the tendency to hold on to things that were once thought to be important but no longer serve a useful purpose. Ā Look carefully atĀ Philippians 3:2:-14 Ā fromĀ The Message

2-6Ā Steer clear of the barking dogs, those religious busybodies, all bark and no bite. All they’re interested in is appearances—knife-happy circumcisers, I call them. The realĀ believers are the ones the Spirit of God leads to work away at this ministry, filling the air with Christ’s praise as we do it. We couldn’t carry this off by our own efforts, and we know it—even though we can list what many might think are impressive credentials. You know my pedigree: a legitimate birth, circumcised on the eighth day; an Israelite from the elite tribe of Benjamin; a strict and devout adherent to God’s law; a fiery defender of the purity of my religion, even to the point of persecuting the church; a meticulous observer of everything set down in God’s law Book.

7-9Ā The very credentials these people are waving around as something special, I’m tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God’srighteousness.

10-11Ā I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself. If there was any way to get in on the resurrection from the dead, I wanted to do it.

12-14Ā I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.

Our life in Christ is a forward moving life. Ā I love the way The Message renders verse 14:Ā I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.” Ā But sometimes the Enemy tries to get us to hold on to some things that keep us from the onward movement with Jesus. Ā For some it is old guilt; for others it is old fears; and for many it is old failures. Ā The Enemy entraps them with all that “used to be” and lies to them by saying “that’s all there will be and it will always be that way.”

All of the trash and junk of sin was nailed to the Cross and onto Jesus. Ā He bore all of that guilt, fear and failures. Ā And because He carried it all the way to His grave God offers to set us free from all of it, I mean ALL of it. Ā He makes this offer as a pure gift, absolute grace: YouĀ no longer have to carry it around! Ā I am setting you free!” Ā God liberates us and then declares us righteous, right with Him by giving to us all of the righteousness that isĀ Jesus. Ā It’s like trading in an old clunker of a car for a brand new car, a new car that has no payments to make because the price was paid in full for us. Ā Just accept God’s gift, plain a simple.

But then there’s that “other” clutter we carry around sometimes. Ā It’s like all that stuff stored in those closets. Ā At one time they were useful and beneficial, but they have served their purpose. Ā Something new and better has arrived on the scene. Ā But sometimes we long for the comfort of the old and familiar rather than the fresh and new of the Holy Spirit. Ā So like that old PBX system, we hold on to it just in case that new PBX system fails us. Ā What I’m trying to say is that sometimes the Enemy wants us to be more religious than righteous. Ā And to be religious means we hold onto the old ways simply because they are the old ways. Ā It can become like Paul warned young Timothy inĀ 1 Timothy 3:5,

They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

Please do not misunderstand me and say things about me that simply are not true. Ā I am not against the rich traditions of the Church. Ā They are priceless reminders of the faithfulness of God and God’s promises to guide us into a new future with Him. Ā But these rich traditions become spiritual clutter when they are no longer used as reminders of God’s faithful presence and His promises of a new future. Ā When Jesus was talking about the New Covenant and true Kingdom of God He compares it with new wine. Ā He summed up the New Covenant this way inĀ Luke 5:38-39 and The VoiceĀ© puts it like this:

New demands new—new wine for new wineskins.Ā Ā Anyway, those who’ve never tasted the new wine won’t know what they’re missing; they’ll always say, ā€œThe old wine is good enough for me!ā€

“The old is good enough for me and it should be good enough for you!” Ā Such are the words of those who have traded in their relationship with God for a religious attitude. Ā It is easy to hold on to the past as if it will be enough. Ā So we store it away and it collects dust. Ā Dust collectors serve no useful purpose. Ā I’m sure if there had been a committee there to decide what items were kept and what items were disposed by the Worship Team, some, if not most of those items would have been kept simply because “some day we might need them” or “we use to use them so keep them”. Ā I read somewhere that if you haven’t worn an item of clothing in 2 years you need to get rid of it because if it’s been 2 years since you wore it why do you think anything will change?

Have you ever watched one of those shows about “hoarders”? Ā It is both sickening and heartbreaking to see people surrounded by stuff that is stifling the life right out of them. Ā It is even sadder when people who have been touched and transformed by the grace of God hold on to the old stuff rather than embrace the new movement of the Holy Spirit. Ā I believe with all my heart that traditional means of worship is a powerful way to experience the presence and promises of God. Ā But if we do it just because we’ve always done it that way, well it is simply stored clutter.

clutter2

Not long after I had met our local Superintendent of Education he was sharing with me his dreams and vision for our local schools. Ā It was bold and daring, and much-needed. Ā He briefly lamented the fact that some were not seeing the vision. Ā It was at that point the Spirit prompted me to share with him this enduring truth. Ā I said, “Keith, do you know the 7 words of a dying church? Ā These 7 words will also fit into any organization, even schools.” Ā He asked me, “What are they?” Ā I replied:

“We’ve never done it that way before!”

The clutter simply is a way to hide from the movement of God through the Holy Spirit. Ā Is there spiritual clutter in your heart? Ā In your mind? Ā Things that are not helping you connect to the Presence and Promises of God? Ā If we cannot connect to the Presence and the Promises, then we will never connect to the Power. Ā Without the power we are just another religion, and Jesus did not die for another religion.

Love God with all your heart; love others the way God loves you; and make sure all the glory goes to Him! Ā Let’s pray:

Lord, I pray with all my heart Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart;Ā test me and know my anxious thoughts. Ā Point out anything in me that offends you,Ā and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Ā If I am a spiritual hoarder, help me see the clutter and especially help me allow YOU to take out whatever offends you. Ā Amen and Amen!
