DO YOU REALLY WANT GOD TO BLESS AMERICA?

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”  Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”  Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”

John chapter 8, verses 35 thru 37; from the New Living Translation

For the benefit of the readers who are not in the U.S. of A., there’s a phrase that keeps floating around. And it’s what I want to write about today. And that phrase is: God Bless America! Here in Alabama you can even get a license plate for your vehicle with that phrase. But, do you really want God to bless America? Now, before you report me to the Un-American Activities Committee, hear me out. I gratefully and proudly fly the American Flag; I support our troops (my son is retired combat veteran and my son-in-law is a combat veteran and still serves), I believe in the Second Amendment (my gun safe testifies to this) and in ALL of the Amendments, I respect law enforcement, and I pray for all appointed and elected leaders–whether I agree with them or not.

So why even suggest that I wouldn’t want God To Bless America? Well, the first reason, and perhaps primary reason, is these words of Jesus to Pilate. Jesus didn’t die to create a Christian nation; He died to restore and fill all of creation with His Image Bearers. And whether you agree with me, or disagree with me, just take a few moments to think about it. When you say God Bless America, here’s what you are asking God to bless:

  • A nation that puts more value on neglected animals than the slaughter of unborn children;
  • A people who says you can’t be a Christian if you are a Republican;
  • A people who says you can’t be a Christian if you are a Democrat;
  • A nation that promotes feelings over science;
  • A nation that wants to blame their current situation on things that happened 200 years ago and not accepting personal responsibility;
  • A nation that is filled with people who think that the world owes them something and everything;
  • A nation that disregards the value of human life by hating and killing others;
  • A nation that blames inanimate objects for their problems;
  • A nation that releases people from the consequences of their choices and actions, even encouraging others to act without considering the consequences;
  • A nation with people who applauds, and even encourages the disrespect of law enforcement officers;
  • A nation with people who complain about government, yet keep on electing the same officials who created the mess;
  • A nation with people who think the rules apply to others but not them;
  • A nation that has people who teach and encourage children that they, the children, possess the mental acuity to determine their own gender, or if they even have a gender;
  • A nation with people that hates anyone who disagrees with them, yet accuses those who disagree with them of being filled with hate;
  • A nation where greed and self-emulation flourishes;

I better stop here. I’ve probably offended enough people already. But you want God to Bless this? Sorry, but I cannot, I will not ask God to bless this mess called the U.S. of A. To do so is asking God to put his Seal of Approval on the mess. Truthfully, I’m not sorry I won’t ask God to Bless The Mess. But what I will do is this:

  • I will admit my own tendency to sin, ask The Father to help me turn away from it, and allow The Spirit to control me;
  • I will, with God’s help, be an instrument of His Light;
  • I will pray that His Light will open the eyes and hearts of others;
  • I will be an example of Jesus to others, and when I’m not, I will repent to God, receive His forgiveness, and ask those I hurt for their forgiveness;
  • I will pray for our leaders to have wisdom–the wisdom that comes only from Above;
  • I will treat others with respect–and when they don’t respect me–I will show them kindness;
  • I will pray that God’s will be done on earth as it is in Heaven, not just the U.S. of A.;
  • I will speak the truth in love, even when no one wants to hear it;
  • I will hope, pray, and believe that the fire of God’s Spirit will kindle another Great Awakening here, and around the world;
  • And I will pray that America will be a nation of Christians, rather than a Christian Nation.
